Dental Bridges in Manhattan

NYC Center for Dental Implants, located in Manhattan NYC, customizes a patient’s cosmetic dental bridges for their unique needs. We will talk you through the options available to you and make recommendations for your treatment plan.

What do dental bridges do?

Dental bridges literally “bridge” the gaps that you have between missing teeth. It’s composed of either two or more crowns on the sides of the gap, and they’re supported by your natural teeth or implants. Bridges have pontics, or fake teeth, which are held in place by the dental crowns. However, there are different types of dental bridges available.

Why do I need a dental bridge?

Having missing teeth is no laughing matter. Just missing one tooth can affect all the other teeth and cause the closest ones to tilt towards the empty space. Teeth opposite the gap may even shift up or down, which can affect how you bite and cause chronic pain. You may also suffer from bone shrinkage, which will cause your jawbone’s shape to morph over time. Depending on how you lost your tooth, you may also be at risk of infection, making it all the more important to see one of our New York dentists for tooth replacement.

What are the benefits?

Once you have a dental bridge, your bite will be restored, and your face will be able to keep its natural shape and structure. You will be able to speak and chew properly again, and your other teeth will stop drifting out of position. That said, the benefits are not only physical: Bridges will also help you be able to smile confidently and without shame.

What are the different kinds of dental bridges available?

There are four main types of dental bridges that we use and recommend to our patients needing tooth replacement, dependent on different factors.

  • Traditional dental bridges.

The most popular type of bridge, traditional dental bridges are held in place by dental crowns and are made of either one or more pontics. We use traditional bridges if you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap; however, since we have to remove the enamel from your adjacent teeth in order to make room for the crown, the other teeth will need to be protected with crowns. These bridges are made of porcelain that’s been fused to metal, or ceramics.

  • Cantilever bridges.

If you have adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth, then Cantilever bridges will be used. They are similar to traditional bridges with the only difference being that the pontic’s support comes from an abutment (dental crown) on only one side.

  • Maryland bridges.

Seen as a more “conservative” option to traditional bridges while still sharing many similarities, Maryland bridges have a pontic held in place by a framework of metal or porcelain, which is then bonded onto the back of the abutment teeth next to your missing tooth. The advantage this offers is that since this bridge isn’t held in place by crowns, no filing needs to be done to the adjacent teeth.

  • Implant-supported bridges.

Instead of using crowns or frameworks, these bridges use dental implants instead of crowns or frameworks. For each missing tooth, you will have one implant surgically placed, which will hold the bridge in place. While it is the strongest system, it does require at least two surgeries: One for the implant embedding, and one to place the bridges. This will take no less than 5 months for you to have the final bridge. It’s worth noting that dental implants are also a solution for replacing your teeth, each with different benefits and drawbacks.
